Sports Quest Mission Trip to Gulfport Mississippi:  March 13-17, 2006

Testimony received from Jeff Wilson, Elder/Assoc. Pastor of Education Henderson Hills Baptist Church

"After 24 years in ministry I've seen and worked with about every kind of para-church organization.  I can honestly say that I'm not impressed too often with how these ministries conduct themselves.  But, Sports Quest is not the typical para-church ministry.  I was TOTALLY impressed.

Each member of the staff served the Lord with all the heart.  They not only did that while conducting the camp, but also while we were doing construction work with our team.  They took the time to get to know our adults and students.  Had a great time having fun with them.  Worked tirelessly.  Didn't seek special treatment.  And conducted a sports clinic like a multi-million dollar company.  Each child that came to the camp was treated like they were Eddie Pope or Landan Donavan.  I haven't seen children so excited, so eager, so hopeful in a long time.

Not only were the students impressed, so were their parents.  Many of them came up to me thanking me for the camp and what it provided for their children and for them.  They have been living in some of the most frustrating conditions for over 6 months now with not too much to be joyful about.  The week we were there provided them a time of enjoyment that they really needed.  As a parent, I know that when my children are having the time of their life, my life is changed.  Thanks for helping to provide a little bit of joy in the lives of hundreds of families in Gulfport .

I would love to work/serve shoulder to shoulder with the men and women of Sports Quest at any time.  I would seriously like to speak to you about conducting a camp here in Edmond .  Please share this email with all those that came to work in Gulfport with us."

Testimony received from Jeff Bruni, President of South Mississippi Soccer Club

"Special thanks again for all that Sports Quest did for our kids and our community.  I had called the local television station several times and was hopeful they would get in touch with Matt or Brian Jones with Henderson Hills Baptist Church to do a story.  Evidently, they did - I missed seeing it.  The text version of the story is below -  www.wlox.com .  I hope you guys had a good time down here.  I was able to meet with Matt at the Sportsplex a couple of times.  The clinic was fantastic.  My kids attended and had a wonderful time.  Each came home with great lessons learned.  I know from speaking with other families that their children's experiences were the same.  This was certainly an uplifting event for the community after all that everyone has been through and many continue to struggle with.  We tried to express this thanks on our website, www.smscsoccer.com .  This year has been an interesting experience for everyone from a soccer perspective in that the Hancock County soccer club - "BAYS" - (where Bay St. Louis and Waveland are located) lost their fields and most of their players.  They still had about 300 kids who wanted to play soccer.  We decided to do what we could to help and allowed them to play their games on our fields.  Our state organization allowed them to cross boundaries to do this so that everyone could help the kids have fun.  We were amazed at how many kids who have never played a sport signed up to play soccer this year in our club - I think it was because soccer was the only sport available for months following the hurricane in our area and everyone wanted their kids to have something to do.  Thanks again.  Jeff"

Group Brings Recreational Relief For Gulfport Kids
"Henderson Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma and Sports Quest, a Christian soccer camp out of Houston , Texas have joined forces to bring some smiles to the faces of youngsters in Gulfport .
Group members spend their days inside gutted homes and their nights on the soccer field.
Linda Scott has lived in her Gulfport home since 1987. Katrina's wind and water dealt her quite a blow.
"I had about two feet of water inside the house and about five feet of water outside of the house. There was enough water to ruin just about everything," said Scott.
Scott's house was ruined, but her spirits were lifted as these Oklahoma student volunteers hammer, paste and saw their way into her home and heart.
"These are the Baptist Angels helping me," said Scott.
After pulling an eight hour shift inside ruined homes, the volunteers head to the soccer field.
"It just seems like everything is in turmoil. When you go down to the beach and see everything else. We wanted to come and kind of take the kids' minds off of it," said Sports Quest director Matt Miller.
Bennett Hollowady of Oklahoma says its no easy task working day and night. But the children make it all worthwhile.
"I was dead tired after roofing today. We are going on six or eight hours of sleep. We are working from 8 o'clock to 9:30 PM everyday. But the kids they are just great," said Hollowady.
"The thoughts that came to our minds when we came down here was to take their minds off of everything. It's their Spring Break. This gives them some fun, something other than cleaning up. Just throw a ball out there and let them play soccer," said Miller.
